Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) stalwart, is poised to formally declare his candidacy under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 Presidential election.
This is coming after months of speculation, multiple sources within the core support group the Obidients, the Senator Nenadi Usman-led LP faction, and ADC officials have confirmed the development.
A leading figure in the Obidient Movement, speaking on condition of anonymity, said:
“Unless there’s a major shift in the coming days, Obi is set to declare for the ADC on Wednesday, December 31st. The decision was tough but inevitable, as the ADC remains one of the few platforms not yet influenced by President Tinubu and the APC.”
He added, “The ADC has leaders capable of mounting a real challenge to APC dominance. This struggle is not about Obi alone; it’s about ensuring Nigeria works for everyone. Obi will bring along federal and state lawmakers, as well as political heavyweights from across the country, to strengthen his influence.”
An ADC chieftain also confirmed Obi’s move, stating, “Our doors are open to him. The candidate selection process will be fully transparent.”
However, some remain skeptical. Dr. Katch Onanuju, a pioneer of the Obidient Movement, said:
“Obi has made his choice, but I fear this move could jeopardize his political future. We had hoped he would help rebuild a new platform after the Labour Party was compromised by forces aligned with the APC. The ADC has entrenched interests, and he joins a little late but we wish him the best.”
Peter Obi’s shift to the ADC marks a significant twist in Nigeria’s political landscape as he positions himself for the 2023 contest outside his longtime Labour Party base.
