The people of Bum community in Chugwi, Vwang District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State began the New Year in deep sorrow following a deadly attack by bandits suspected to be Fulani militia on New Year’s Eve, which claimed the lives of seven residents.
The tragic incident was confirmed by the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youths Moulder-Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, in a statement issued on Wednesday. He disclosed that aside from the seven people already confirmed dead, several others are still missing.
In the statement titled “Another Killing Marred New Year Celebration in Plateau State,” Tengwong said the attack has further added to the growing list of violent assaults on innocent rural communities across Plateau State, raising serious concerns about the safety of lives and property, especially during festive periods meant for peace and celebration.
According to the statement, while many parts of the world were welcoming the New Year in celebration, residents of Bum community were plunged into mourning following the deadly attack by suspected armed Fulani militants or bandits.
The attack reportedly occurred at about 11:00 p.m. on December 31, 2025, just minutes into the New Year, as peace-loving residents were preparing to bid farewell to 2025 and usher in 2026.
“As at the time of filing this report, seven corpses have been recovered, while search and rescue efforts are still ongoing, raising fears that the casualty figure may rise,” the statement said.
It further revealed that the incident occurred despite an earlier security alert warning that several communities in Jos South Local Government Area had been earmarked for possible attacks. Sadly, Bum community has now fallen victim to the renewed wave of violence.
The Berom Youths Moulder-Association stated that it is closely monitoring developments surrounding the attack and will continue to provide updates as the situation unfolds.
