The Imo State Police Command has successfully dismantled a notorious IPOB/ESN terror group syndicate involved in kidnapping and armed robbery.

The Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit neutralized three suspects during a gun battle in Orogwe, Owerri West Local Government Area of the state.

According to the Command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, the gang was allegedly involved in the kidnapping of Osuji Caleb Chimereze and three others in November. Okoye revealed that two police officers sustained injuries during the shootout and later died from their injuries.

On December 19, 2024, the police engaged the criminals in a gun battle, neutralizing three suspects and arresting two others, David Ifeanyichukwu (20) and Abuchi Joseph (24). The gang had been involved in the abduction of Osuji Caleb Chimereze and three others on November 12, 2024, during which they stole a Mercedes Benz and other valuables. The police operation followed extensive investigation and intelligence gathering.

During the confrontation, the operatives recovered six AK-47 rifles, 113 rounds of ammunition, a locally made gun, and two stolen vehicles: a Mercedes Benz ML 350 and a Hijet shuttle bus. The suspects had used these vehicles in their criminal activities, including other kidnappings.

The Imo State Police Command mourned the loss of the two officers and commended their dedication. Efforts are now focused on capturing the remaining members of the syndicate who managed to escape during the operation.

With the upcoming holiday season, the Imo State Police Command, under the leadership of CP Aboki Danjuma, is intensifying patrols and security operations in synergy with other security agencies to ensure a hitch-free yuletide.
