In an exclusive interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, Fidet Okhiria, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), announced the imminent commencement of the highly anticipated Port-Harcourt-Aba, Lagos to Kano train services in the first quarter of 2024.

This marks a significant milestone in the expansion of the country’s railway network.

Okhiria revealed ambitious plans for 2024, including the initiation of six daily trips on the Standard Gauge Train nationwide. Despite challenges posed by the current state of the country, the NRC aims to enhance operations by increasing the frequency of trips on key routes such as Lagos-Ibadan, Warri-Itakpe, and Abuja-Kaduna.

The Managing Director emphasized the commitment to a 24-hour operational model for trains, addressing concerns about security and limited nighttime operations. Okhiria stated, “Train is meant to operate at all times,” expressing the Corporation’s determination to provide convenient travel options for passengers and efficient freight services.

Highlighting the NRC’s focus on reducing commodity prices, Okhiria pointed out that the introduction of freight trains across the country would play a pivotal role. With plans to revive passenger and freight train services from Port-Harcourt to Aba, Lagos to Kano, and Kaduna due to dry ports, the NRC aims to stimulate economic activities and bolster trade.

Addressing previous challenges, Okhiria mentioned the prompt resolution of vandalism issues in the Warri-Itakpe area in 2023, assuring that occupied train tracks would deter future incidents. The Managing Director emphasized the potential for reduced business transaction times and increased government revenue through strategic partnerships with dry ports nationwide.

As a testament to the commitment to growth, Okhiria disclosed the recent employment of junior staff to enhance NRC operations. Pending government approval, these new hires are expected to contribute to the Corporation’s efforts to optimize railway services across the country.

Commending government initiatives to connect rail networks throughout Nigeria, Okhiria urged citizens to embrace and actively participate in the growing realm of rail transportation. The upcoming developments underscore the transformative impact of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, poised to reshape the nation’s transport landscape in the coming year.
