The presidency has called on Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State to retract his “inflammatory” statement regarding the Tax Reform Bill.
President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, addressed the issue in a social media post on Monday, stating that Mohammed’s remark, “We’ll show Tinubu our true colour,” does not reflect the stance of the north.
Dare emphasized that the statement undermines the constructive dialogue needed between states and the Federal Government. His post followed Mohammed’s comments made on December 25, 2024, during a Christmas homage by the Christian community at the Government House in Bauchi.
Governor Mohammed had opposed Tinubu’s tax reform policies, labeling them as “anti-northern” and suggesting they favored only a section of the country. He warned that if the policies continued, the north would “show its true colours.”
In his post titled ‘RE: We’ll show Tinubu our True Colour,’ Dare urged Mohammed to retract his confrontational remarks and focus on productive dialogue with the Federal Government regarding concerns about the Tax Reform Act. Dare asserted that the statement does not represent the collective voice of Northern Nigeria, which seeks collaborative governance and constructive engagement with the Federal Government to address national challenges.
Dare suggested that instead of issuing threats, Mohammed should direct his energy toward implementing effective poverty alleviation programs and ensuring transparent utilization of federal resources. He highlighted that the Tax Reform Act and increased federal allocations significantly benefit the states.
