Rivers State House of Assembly members who previously defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) have decided to withdraw the impeachment notice against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The legislators, reportedly aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, made this decision during their recent session on Wednesday, December 20.

The withdrawal is attributed to their adherence to the directives outlined in the resolution reached during a stakeholders’ meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on Monday, addressing the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State. They emphasized that their action demonstrated respect for the President.

In recent weeks, Rivers State has grappled with a political turmoil between former Governor Wike and his successor, Fubara. The conflict has manifested through parallel sittings in the State House of Assembly, an attempted impeachment against the governor, the demolition of the Assembly complex, and a series of resignations by pro-Wike commissioners in Fubara’s cabinet.

To mediate the rift between Wike and Fubara, President Bola Tinubu convened a meeting with the involved parties, alongside former state governor Peter Odili. The three-hour-long discussion at the Aso Villa in Abuja resulted in a truce.

Following the Aso Villa meeting, the conflicting parties reached an agreement that all legal matters initiated by Fubara and his team be promptly withdrawn. The agreement, signed by Fubara, Wike, Amaewhule, and other stakeholders involved in the crisis, also bore the signature of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.
