Recent reports about Russian President Vladimir Putin unveiling an official BRICS currency have been debunked by an X community note.

This clarification comes after a user, identified as @GlobeEyeNews, claimed that Putin had revealed a BRICS banknote intended to replace the U.S. dollar.

The user’s post highlighted a banknote supposedly featuring various national flags, including Nigeria’s, with inscriptions in Hausa written (JAMHURIYAR TARAYYAR NAJERIYA) one of Nigeria’s local languages instead of English official Nigeria language.

The note raised concerns as Nigeria’s official language is English, and the potential use of a single local language could trigger ethnic tensions within the country. The claim also speculated that such a currency could provoke conflict between Western nations and BRICS member states.

However, the X community note clarified that no such currency was unveiled by Putin at the 2024 BRICS summit. Instead, the summit focused on the bloc’s expansion, with the addition of 13 new partner nations, including Nigeria, signaling the growing influence of BRICS. These new countries are joining as partners rather than full members, according to sources from the summit.
