In a distressing manifestation of the prevailing hardships faced by many Nigerians, a government storage facility in Gwagwa town, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), was looted by desperate Nigerians on Sunday morning.

Eyewitnesses reported to Daily Trust that a multitude of youths stormed the warehouse around 7 am, making off with large quantities of maize and grain.

The looting spree, according to local resident Jaafar Aminu, lasted for about two hours. The incident drew crowds from nearby towns, causing significant traffic congestion. Aminu described a scene of desperation as people from various areas rushed to the site, hoping to secure some of the looted items.

Christopher Agbo, another resident, noted that the looters were indiscriminate, taking not only food items but also any other materials they found valuable. This incident is a grim reminder of a similar event during the Covid-19 lockdown when relief supplies were stolen from the same warehouse.

Following the raid on the government facility, the crowd moved on to the Idu Industrial Estate, targeting more warehouses. At the time of reporting, there was a noticeable lack of security personnel at the scene. However, FCT police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, assured that police forces were on the scene and working to restore order.
