The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has scheduled new local government elections for August 9, 2025.

This decision follows the Supreme Court’s recent judgment nullifying the October 5th elections due to non-compliance with regulations.

RSIEC Chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), revealed the new date during a stakeholders meeting at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt. He also presented the guidelines for the rescheduled elections.

Political parties must submit an expression of interest form by April 4, 2025, to be eligible to field candidates. Primaries are to be concluded between April 21 and May 12, 2025. Campaigns will run from July 7 to August 7, 2025.

Justice Enebeli emphasized that nominations will only be valid if candidates pay N5,000 for councilor positions and N10,000 for chairmanship and vice-chairmanship positions.
