Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has approved a new minimum wage of N85,000 for civil servants, setting a new standard as one of the highest-paying states in Nigeria.
This decision was finalized during a closed-door meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt, attended by labor representatives from the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council.
Speaking to the press after the meeting, Dr. George Nwaeke, Head of the Rivers State Civil Service, confirmed the governor’s approval, noting that the new wage surpasses the national minimum wage. Implementation will begin in November 2024.
“He (Governor Fubara) has graciously approved N85,000, a figure above the national standard. This is unprecedented for civil servants in Rivers State,” Dr. Nwaeke said, adding that a technical committee would address issues regarding arrears and work out the payment structure.
Comrade Emecheta Chuku, Chairman of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, expressed delight with the governor’s decision, describing it as a demonstration of Governor Fubara’s dedication to the welfare of workers, despite the challenges facing the state.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Chairman for Rivers State, Comrade Alex Agwanwor, praised the approval, pointing out that this move places Rivers State on par with Lagos, despite their different revenue capacities. “We are proud to be among the best-paying states, and labor will continue to support the governor for his worker-friendly policies,” Agwanwor said.
Labor leaders vowed to stand by Governor Fubara, commending his consistent efforts to prioritize the well-being of state workers.
