Renowned professor of political economy and management expert, Professor Patrick Utomi, has expressed his concern over the state of Nigeria’s legislature, labeling it a rubber stamp and accusing it of allowing the country to drift aimlessly.
Utomi made these remarks while consoling the family of the late 8th Speaker of the National Assembly, Ghali Umar Na’Abba, during a visit to Kano.
Utomi emphasized the need for an independent legislature that aligns government policy with service to the people. He asserted that the current state of the legislature falls short of this ideal, describing it as a rubber stamp that fails to provide viable options for the nation.
Utomi praised the late Na’Abba for his past leadership, highlighting how he offered alternatives and collaborated with civil society to establish a functional system.
Reflecting on the present situation, Utomi stated, “Today we don’t have a legislature. I can say that without even batting an eyelid. We have a rubber stamp legislature that is watching the country drift aimlessly and is not offering options.”
He emphasized the need for a different approach to save the country, echoing the sentiments of other concerned citizens.
Utomi concluded by expressing the collective desire of true nationalists to honor the late Na’Abba’s spirit and make it a focal point for the nation’s reconstruction, working towards a better future for all.
