In a decisive move on Thursday, the Nigerian Senate granted approval for the appointment of 11 new Justices to the Supreme Court.

The endorsement followed the meticulous scrutiny conducted by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, with Senator Mohammed Monguno presenting the comprehensive report.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a letter sent to the Senate on Wednesday, formally requested confirmation for the 11 nominees.

These individuals, previously recommended by the National Judicial Council (NJC), include distinguished names like Justice Haruna Tsammani, Justice Moore Adumein, Justice Jummai Sankey, Justice Chidiebere Uwa, and Justice Chioma Nwosu-Iheme.

Completing the roster are Justice Obande Ogbuinya, Justice Stephen Adah, Justice Habeeb Abiru, Justice Jamilu Tukur, Justice Abubakar Umar, and Justice Mohammed Idris. With this approval, the Supreme Court’s bench expands from 10 to 21 Justices, aligning with the constitutional mandate set forth in the 1999 Constitution (As Amended).
