The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has made a shocking revelation that approximately N2.187 trillion was misused, embezzled, or laundered by no less than 58 former governors over a quarter of a century.
Notable figures such as Senate President Godswill Akpabio, 2023 NNPP presidential candidate Musa Kwakwanso, and Bola Tinubu’s minister Bello Matawalle, among others, are on the list.
This staggering figure does not account for the billions of Naira worth of properties seized globally or those currently under investigation. The looted sum of N2.2 trillion is comparable to the combined 2024 budgets of Lagos State and the South-East states, which total N2.25 trillion and N2.29 trillion respectively. This amount surpasses the 2024 budgets of the North-Central and North-East states, which stand at N1.89 trillion and N1.60 trillion respectively, by a significant margin.
The EFCC is actively investigating, scrutinizing, and prosecuting 58 former governors from different parts of the country. Since the reinstatement of civilian rule on May 29, 1999, Nigeria’s 36 states have seen at least 170 governors in office. The 58 former governors currently or previously under EFCC investigation are implicated in the alleged misappropriation of funds.
