Simon Ekpa, the self-styled leader of the Biafra Government in Exile, has once again solicited donations from his followers during a recent Zoom meeting.
He aims to gather funds to charter a jet for a significant event planned in Ebonyi State, Nigeria, where he intends to declare Biafra’s independence on December 2, 2024, a source stated.
According to an anonymous follower who spoke with NN News Media, the funds are intended to facilitate travel for members of the Biafra Government in Exile and international supporters attending the declaration event.
When questioned about why Ebonyi was chosen over Enugu—historically regarded as Biafra’s headquarters—the follower explained that Ekpa enjoys greater popularity in Ebonyi at this time, although he hinted that future plans might involve relocating the headquarters back to Enugu.
Despite a video in which Ekpa suggested a prolonged struggle for independence that could last up to twenty-three years, he remains adamant about achieving Biafra’s restoration on the set date. His online operations have created an intricate narrative claiming the existence of a Biafran financial system, including a fictional “Biafrcoin,” which has no real-world counterpart.
Many observers believe Ekpa’s movement is driven by personal financial gain, with supporters funneling money based on his claims of a fabricated referendum, in which he asserts 50 million people have already cast votes for independence.
Recently, Ekpa intensified his separatist messaging, declaring a “sit-at-home” protest last Monday and Tuesday while sharing misleading images of purported armory and warship resources. One such image, supposedly from a Togolese armory incident, circulated widely before it was debunked.
Simon Ekpa has not only promoted fraudulent financial schemes but has also positioned himself as a militant leader, advocating violence and armed resistance in Nigeria’s southeastern region. His rhetoric incites unrest, putting innocent civilians and their properties at increased risk.
