Former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, has said that the airstrikes carried out in parts of Sokoto State on Thursday were aimed at criminal groups and terrorists, not innocent civilians.
Reacting to reports of the operation, Tambuwal explained that the strikes were part of ongoing counterterrorism efforts carried out through cooperation between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the United States. He noted that terrorist groups have continued to pose a serious threat to public safety, with civilians often bearing the brunt of their actions.
Tambuwal stressed that protecting civilian lives remains a top priority in all legitimate security operations. He reassured residents that the objective of the exercise was to neutralize criminal and terrorist elements responsible for insecurity in the state.
He also called on communities affected by the airstrikes to remain calm and law-abiding while authorities clarify details surrounding the operation. According to him, he is already engaging relevant security agencies to obtain full information and ensure that necessary safeguards are maintained.
The former governor commended the Nigerian military and security forces for their courage and professionalism, praising their collaboration with international partners in the fight against terrorism and banditry.
Tambuwal further urged community leaders, traditional institutions, and residents to support security agencies by sharing credible information and resisting misinformation that could create fear or tension.
He expressed confidence that through unity, vigilance, and cooperation with lawful security efforts, Sokoto State and Nigeria would overcome terrorism and achieve lasting peace.
