Leaders from the five South East states—Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo—along with traditional rulers, opinion leaders, captains of industry, and distinguished figures from diverse political backgrounds are anticipated to gather in Umuahia on Friday, December 29, for the launch of the ‘Peace in South East Project.’
The event will coincide with a homecoming reception for Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu. Mrs. Mary Ikoku, the Chairperson of the Media and Communication Committee of the project, shared details during a press conference in Abuja, emphasizing the aim to acknowledge Kalu’s dedication to public service and exceptional contributions to the South East and the nation as a whole.
Organized by the Peace in South East Project and the people of Bende Local Government Area in Abia, the initiative is a joint effort with the community of the Deputy Speaker’s federal constituency.
Ikoku expressed profound pride in Kalu’s achievements, highlighting his continuous commitment to the well-being and progress of the people. As the Deputy Speaker, Kalu has played a pivotal role in shaping policies that address the needs and aspirations of Bende Local Government Area, the South East, and the nation, she noted.
The Peace in South East Project advocates a non-kinetic strategy, challenging the prevalent use of total military force to address security challenges in the region. Ikoku urged the Nigerian military to adjust its operational strategy by engaging with the people to foster mutual trust and cooperation.
While emphasizing the need for a dialogue, Ikoku stated, “A beacon of hope is here with a new non-kinetic approach. Let us dialogue and have a conversation with our people who are up in arms. All we want is peace in the South-East.”
Ogbonna Ukuku, Head of Programmes, lauded members of the House of Representatives for passing the bill on the establishment of the South-East Development Commission. He believes this development will significantly contribute to bringing about peace in the region.
The forthcoming event is set to mark the formal declaration of peace in the South East. Ukuku emphasized its significance, stating, “All people across the country are coming. It’s a significant gathering and a declaration of peace in the South-East.” The program’s thematic areas of focus include agriculture, education, leadership and good governance, sports and entertainment, culture, and tourism, among others.
