Senators representing the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria have officially endorsed the controversial Tax Reform Bills currently under consideration by the National Assembly.

In a statement released by Senator Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa West, the senators emphasized the critical role these reforms play in enhancing national revenue and promoting economic stability.

The statement underscored their commitment to a detailed assessment of the bills to ensure they meet the needs of all Nigerians, particularly those in the South-South region.

The senators called for a measured approach to discussions surrounding the bills, urging stakeholders to avoid introducing regional or ethnic sentiments into the national dialogue. They expressed a desire for constructive interactions and consultations as part of the legislative process.

Following a meeting on December 4, 2024, the South-South senators articulated their collective support for Senate President Godswill Akpabio, reinforcing their confidence in his leadership. They pledged to collaborate with colleagues across party lines to advance an agenda that fosters national unity and economic development.

The communiqué was signed by a significant number of senators from various states within the region, including Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Edo, Cross River, Delta, and Rivers States. Their unified stance reflects a shared commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s fiscal framework while addressing regional concerns.

This endorsement comes amid ongoing debates regarding the implications of the proposed tax reforms, which aim to alleviate tax burdens for many Nigerians and stimulate economic growth. The South-South senators remain dedicated to ensuring that any legislative changes align with the interests of their constituents while contributing to the broader goals of good governance and national prosperity.
