In a recent gathering organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Abuja, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, underscored the critical role of press freedom in fostering good governance.
Delivering a keynote address at the Press Freedom and Good Governance Awards, Abbas emphasized the intrinsic link between press freedom and effective governance, highlighting its significance in a healthy democracy.
Representing the 10th House, Abbas stressed the house’s recognition of the pivotal role played by a free and responsible press in society. He emphasized that press freedom ensures the media’s independence, enabling them to hold those in power accountable and act as a watchdog for the public interest. When the media are free from censorship or reprisal, they can illuminate the government’s actions, policies, and decisions, thereby promoting transparency and accountability.
Abbas further emphasized that in societies where press freedom thrives, journalists play a crucial role in curbing governmental excesses. With the freedom and courage to investigate and expose corruption, abuse of power, and other malpractices, the media act as a check on governmental power, safeguarding democratic principles and promoting adherence to the rule of law.
Similarly, Minister of Information and Orientation, Mohammed Idris, reiterated the government’s commitment to press freedom, promising not to impede the media’s constitutional responsibility of holding the government accountable. However, he emphasized the media’s responsibility to combat misinformation and fake news, underscoring the need for balanced reporting and truthful dissemination of information.
NUJ National President, Chris Isiguzo, urged government support for the media to facilitate good governance. He acknowledged journalists as frontline warriors against environmental degradation and advocates for sustainable solutions. Isiguzo emphasized the indispensable role of journalists in bringing to light crucial stories, amplifying the voices of the marginalized, and holding the powerful accountable.
In conclusion, the event highlighted the symbiotic relationship between press freedom and good governance, emphasizing the media’s indispensable role as guardians of truth and champions of freedom in society.
