In a captivating quarterfinal clash at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Ademola Lookman emerged as the hero, securing a 1-0 victory for the Super Eagles against Angola and securing their spot in the semifinals.

Staying true to the winning formula from the previous round, Jose Peseiro fielded the same lineup that triumphed over Cameroon with goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali passing a late fitness test to maintain his pivotal role. Lookman and Moses Simon provided the attacking prowess alongside the formidable Victor Osimhen.

The Super Eagles kicked off the game with determination and purpose, showcased early on by Nwabali’s outstanding save in the fourth minute that denied Angola the lead. Osimhen, however, missed a crucial opportunity to find the target shortly afterward.

Building on his stellar performance against Cameroon, Lookman once again took center stage, delivering a crucial goal just before halftime. Moses Simon orchestrated a breakaway from an Angolan defender, setting up Lookman for a spectacular finish, granting Nigeria the lead heading into the second half.

Despite Angola’s efforts in the second half, the Super Eagles’ robust defense proved impenetrable. Gelson Dala’s close attempt hitting the bar on the hour mark highlighted Angola’s missed opportunities.

Victor Osimhen appeared to extend Nigeria’s lead in the 75th minute with a powerful header, but VAR consultation led the referee to rule out the goal. Peseiro made strategic substitutions, bringing in Alhassan Yusuf for Alex Iwobi and introducing Paul Onuachu for Osimhen, along with Kenneth Omeruo for Lookman in the final moments.

Despite Angola’s persistent push for an equalizer, the Super Eagles held firm, securing their place in the competition’s last four. Ademola Lookman’s decisive strike and a resilient defensive display marked a triumphant journey to the semifinals for Nigeria.
