In a highly anticipated decision delivered on Friday, the Supreme Court upheld the electoral victory of Governor Abba Yusuf in Kano.

The court ruling addressed the appeal filed by Mr. Yusuf and his party, NNPP, challenging the earlier appellate court’s decision that confirmed his removal as declared by the Kano governorship election petitions tribunal.

Previously, the tribunal had ousted Governor Yusuf, directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw his certificate of return and declare Nasir Yusuf Gawuna, the All-Progressives Congress candidate, as the rightful winner. Disputing this decision, Mr. Yusuf appealed the judgment.

However, the appellate court, while upholding the removal, asserted that Governor Yusuf was not a member of NNPP at the time of the election.

Consequently, the court concluded that he could not have been deemed properly sponsored for the election. Despite this setback, the Supreme Court’s recent decision solidifies Governor Abba Yusuf’s electoral triumph in Kano.
