The Supreme Court has deferred its judgment on the appeals challenging the election of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in Delta State.

The All-Progressives Congress (APC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Labour Party (LP), along with their respective candidates, had lodged the appeals.

Despite affirmations from the Court of Appeal and the Delta State Election Petition Tribunal supporting Oborevwori’s victory, the legal battle rages on.

The appellants, SDP, APC, and PDP, have pleaded with the apex court to unseat the governor, arguing that allegations of non-compliance and electoral malpractice against him were not adequately scrutinized. Robert E, counsel for the former Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, stressed that the absence of serial numbers on sensitive electoral materials should warrant an annulment under the Electoral Act.

In a counterargument, Damian Dodo, the governor’s counsel, urged the Supreme Court to uphold the lower courts’ decisions, asserting that the appellants lack a substantive case. Dodo highlighted that the relevant electoral laws do not stipulate the annulment of an election due to the absence of serial numbers on electoral materials.

The intrigue reached its peak as the Supreme Court’s five-man panel, led by Justice Inyang Okoro, chose to keep everyone on the edge of their seats by reserving judgment. The eagerly awaited decision will be communicated to the concerned parties at a later date, adding an extra layer of suspense to this high-stakes legal showdown.
