In a landmark decision on Friday, the Supreme Court supported the Federal Government’s treason and terrorism charges against Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), despite acknowledging the illegal repatriation of Kanu to Nigeria.
The apex court criticized the Court of Appeal’s earlier ruling, emphasizing that the trial court has the authority to preside over Kanu’s case.
The final judgment, scheduled for December 15, follows a prolonged legal battle dating back to 2015. The Court of Appeal had previously quashed all charges against Kanu, citing his forceful rendition from Kenya as a violation of international laws.
However, the Supreme Court, while condemning the prosecution’s actions, asserted that the trial court retains jurisdiction, allowing the Federal Government’s appeal and underscoring the importance of adhering to both international and local law.
