A tragic incident marred today’s by-election in parts of Anambra State, as a high-speed convoy allegedly involving operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) struck two tricycles in Onitsha, killing a pedestrian and leaving several others critically injured.

The crash occurred around 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, 2025, along the People’s Club/Limca (Old) Road in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area. Witnesses say a black Lexus Jeep, believed to be part of a security escort, was speeding when it rammed into the tricycles, completely destroying one and fatally hitting a passerby.

All injured passengers from the tricycles were quickly rushed to a nearby hospital, where they were reportedly placed on the danger list.

An eyewitness, who chose to remain anonymous, said the convoy included about four armed men. “After the crash, they saw the damage they caused the injuries, the death and they fled the scene with their rifles, leaving the vehicle behind. People started gathering, and they likely ran to avoid mob retaliation,” he recounted.

Sources say tension rose quickly in the area, with sympathisers and road users allegedly mobilising to confront the fleeing operatives.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
