The Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs to former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, has refuted claims linking his principal to an alleged coup plot, calling them “false, baseless, and politically motivated.”
In a statement on Wednesday, Julius Bokoru emphasized that Sylva has no connection to any coup-related activities and reaffirmed his steadfast loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Chief Timipre Sylva remains a committed democrat and supporter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. These rumours are the handiwork of political opponents trying to tarnish his image ahead of 2027,” Bokoru said.
While denying any coup involvement, Bokoru confirmed that Sylva’s Abuja residence was recently raided by individuals believed to be operatives of the Defence Headquarters.
“For the avoidance of doubt, it is true that the residence of His Excellency, Chief Timipre Sylva, was recently subjected to a raid by individuals believed to be operatives of the Defence Headquarters. Considerable damage was inflicted on the property during the operation,” he stated.
Bokoru added that the reason for the raid was never disclosed, noting that both Sylva and his wife were abroad at the time. The former Bayelsa State governor was reportedly undergoing routine medical checks in the United Kingdom and was scheduled to attend a professional conference in Malaysia.
“As of my last communication with His Excellency, he was undergoing routine medical checks in the United Kingdom, after which he was scheduled to attend a professional conference in Malaysia,” Bokoru said.
He urged the public to disregard what he described as politically sponsored propaganda, stressing that democratic values have always guided Sylva’s political career.
Bokoru also recalled that the Defence Headquarters had publicly denied any involvement in a coup plot, emphasizing that the allegations were intended to mislead the public.
