Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has called on PDP chieftain and elder statesman, Bode George, to step away from active politics.

Lawal’s comments came in response to George’s dismissal of a proposed coalition between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other political groups. Speaking on Channels Television, George had criticized the coalition idea, claiming it would be demeaning for a major party like the PDP to align with what he called “structure-less political movements.” He also warned against repeating past mistakes, particularly the PDP’s decision to offer its 2023 presidential ticket to Atiku Abubakar.

“It would be unfair to give the ticket to another northerner after eight years of President Muhammadu Buhari,” George said, describing such a move as unjust.

In an interview with The Punch, Babachir Lawal responded by questioning George’s relevance in current political dynamics.

“I respect Bode George as a retired military officer. He was already a governor when I was still in military school,” Lawal said. “But politically, I think it’s time for him to retire and enjoy his legacy. His age and experience should have taught him that.”

Lawal further claimed that George has failed to significantly impact PDP’s electoral success in Lagos over the years, suggesting he no longer reflects the party’s direction.

“He has some credibility based on his past, but I don’t believe he speaks for the PDP today. The party will figure out its future without him,” he added.
