Former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal has advised those seeking the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress ADC to place national interest and party unity above personal ambition as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.
Speaking at the ADC national convention with party leaders and delegates present, Tambuwal stressed that the party must avoid internal conflict driven by competition among leading figures. He said the focus should remain on a shared goal rather than individual political ambition.
He noted that the growing debate in public space and media, driven by supporters of different aspirants, has created tension around who deserves the party ticket. He warned that such rivalry could weaken the party if not properly managed.
Among the prominent figures mentioned as participants in the party discussions were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi. All four have shown interest in the ADC presidential ticket for 2027.
Tambuwal described their presence in the same political space as an opportunity for cooperation, saying the party must work as one team focused on what he described as the rescue of Nigeria. He emphasized that no personal ambition should stand in the way of the collective mission of the party.
He also warned that the country is going through a difficult political period where leaders must act responsibly and protect democratic values. According to him, public office holders and political actors should remember that their actions are being watched by both present and future generations.
Tambuwal further directed attention to the judiciary, expressing concern about recent developments in the justice system. He referenced the role of Justice Bassey Ikpeme in the events surrounding the June 12 1993 presidential election, which was won by Moshood Abiola but later annulled under military rule led by Ibrahim Babangida.
He cautioned judicial officers against allowing themselves to be influenced in ways that could harm democracy or undermine national stability. He said those in positions of authority should remain accountable, stressing that ultimate judgment rests beyond human institutions.
He ended by urging all stakeholders in the ADC to protect the unity of the platform and work together toward a common political direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
