Nigeria has again been thrown into grief and outrage under President Bola Tinubu after one of the teachers abducted from Community High School, Ahoro Esinle in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, was reportedly murdered by his captors.

The victim, identified as Michael Oyedokun, was said to have been killed in a disturbing video allegedly released by the kidnappers on Sunday. The shocking development has deepened fears over worsening insecurity across the country and raised fresh concerns about the safety of those still being held captive.

Residents of the community have been left devastated as families mourn the brutal killing of the teacher, described by many as dedicated and hardworking. The tragic incident has also intensified calls for stronger security action as kidnappings and violent attacks continue to spread across several parts of Nigeria.

Confirming the incident on Monday, the Special Adviser on Media to Governor Seyi Makinde, Dr Suleimon Olanrewaju, said the governor had reached out to the family of the slain teacher and expressed condolences over the painful loss.

Governor Makinde revealed that seven teachers were abducted during the attack on the school. According to him, the latest video received by authorities showed that one of the victims, believed to be the school’s mathematics teacher, had been killed by the terrorists.

The governor assured residents that the state government would continue using both military operations and intelligence driven strategies to rescue the remaining victims still in captivity.

Makinde also disclosed that security agencies had already made several arrests connected to the kidnapping operation.

According to information provided by the Commissioner of Police, six suspects were arrested within the community where the incident happened. Authorities believe some of those arrested may have acted as informants or provided logistical support for the kidnappers.

The governor further stated that another security outfit in the state arrested three additional persons of interest linked to the crime.

As rescue efforts continue, Makinde also sympathised with the families of security operatives who lost their lives during attempts to save the kidnapped teachers. He said some soldiers, Amotekun officers and local vigilantes were killed after encountering explosives allegedly planted by the abductors.

Several injured operatives are currently receiving medical treatment following the deadly rescue mission.

Makinde admitted that resolving the crisis may not happen immediately but insisted that the government and security agencies would continue pushing every possible effort to bring the remaining victims home safely.

The killing of Michael Oyedokun has sparked fresh anger among Nigerians, many of whom say insecurity is worsening across the country despite repeated promises from the federal government to tackle terrorism, banditry and kidnapping.

The latest tragedy has once again placed national attention on the growing insecurity crisis affecting schools, rural communities and ordinary citizens across Nigeria.
