President Bola Tinubu has generously rewarded Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic victory by awarding each player $100,000 and each member of the 11-man coaching and technical crew $50,000.
In addition, every individual players and technical staff alike was gifted a three-bedroom flat at Renewed Hope Estate. Adding to these accolades, all team members and officials were conferred the prestigious national honor of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
The announcement was made by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a grand presidential reception held at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja. The event served as an official recognition of the team’s phenomenal achievement.
D’Tigress, along with their officials, received a warm welcome from First Lady Oluremi Tinubu and the Wife of the Vice President, Nana Shettima, at the Presidential Villa’s New Banquet Hall. Vice President Shettima, on behalf of President Tinubu, personally received the team in tribute to their outstanding success. Other dignitaries in attendance included Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Chairman of the Senate Committee on Youths and Sports Development, Garba Maidoki; and Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Kabiru Amadou.
This momentous occasion celebrated D’Tigress’s latest triumph clinching their fifth consecutive AfroBasket championship by defeating Mali 78–64 in the final held at Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. This win elevates their total AfroBasket titles to seven, solidifying their dominance in African women’s basketball.
The luxurious reception for D’Tigress at the Presidential Villa notably mirrors the recognition recently given to Nigeria’s female national football team, the Super Falcons, who won their tenth WAFCON title in Rabat, Morocco, just a week prior. President Tinubu’s honor and rewards underscore Nigeria’s commitment to celebrating its female sports champions at the highest level.
