President Bola Tinubu on Sunday declared that the course of Nigeria’s history would have been altered if he had failed to secure victory in the 2023 presidential election.

Speaking at the 8th Day Fidau prayers for the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Tinubu paid heartfelt tribute to the late monarch. He credited Oba Adetona’s support and blessings as instrumental in his political journey and in clinching success during the 2023 polls.

“Our history would not have been completed, carefully and richly, if I failed the last election,” Tinubu emphasized, recalling the monarch’s words of encouragement: “You will win that election, and you will win one more time. Go ahead.”

Tinubu expressed his gratitude for the late Awujale’s wisdom, steadfastness, and role in upholding the ideals of June 12 and advancing democracy in Nigeria. He described Oba Adetona’s guidance as pivotal not only to his personal journey but also to the nation’s democratic progress.

He extended special thanks to the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun whom he called the “Okanlomo Eleyi of Ogun State” for his unwavering support before, during, and after the monarch’s burial.

Governor Abiodun, in his address, urged the people of Ijebuland to remain united and continue the legacy of peace, harmony, and selfless leadership that the late Awujale championed. He encouraged residents to honor the monarch’s memory through actions that reflect integrity and dignity.

The Chief Imam of Gbagura, Prof. Kamaldeen Bello, delivered a sermon highlighting the inevitability of death and the importance of living with purpose:

“We will all taste death, so live as though today is your last,” he admonished.

The event was attended by an array of dignitaries, including the Governors of Kwara, Ondo, and Ekiti States, as well as the Deputy Governors of Oyo and Lagos States, ministers, and other notable guests.
