President Bola Tinubu announced on Monday that Nigerian motorists now have the choice to either purchase petrol at N1,000 per litre or opt for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) at a significantly lower cost of N200 per Standard Cubic Meter (SCM).
During a meeting with executives from NIPCO at the State House in Abuja, President Tinubu outlined his administration’s efforts to ease the burden of high petrol prices by introducing incentives for commercial drivers to switch from petrol to CNG. Notably, the conversion comes at no cost to these motorists, aimed at making the transition more accessible.
The president praised NIPCO for its substantial investments in Nigeria’s CNG infrastructure and its role in supporting the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI). Tinubu described NIPCO as a vital player in driving the adoption of CNG as an alternative fuel in the country.
“Nigerian motorists can either purchase petrol at N1,000 per litre or switch to CNG at N200 per Standard Cubic Meter,” President Tinubu stated, emphasizing that commercial drivers have the opportunity to convert to CNG for free.
Ramesh Kasangra, NIPCO’s Director, led the delegation to the meeting and reiterated the company’s long-standing commitment to Nigeria. Having operated in the country for over 40 years, NIPCO plans to continue investing in CNG infrastructure to make the fuel more accessible nationwide.
President Tinubu commended NIPCO’s role in promoting the “Switch to CNG” campaign, which he credited for raising public awareness and providing affordable conversion kits ahead of the official launch of the Presidential CNG Initiative. He highlighted the initiative’s importance in reducing Nigeria’s dependency on petrol and lowering fuel costs for consumers.
CNG, being cleaner and more affordable, helps reduce carbon emissions while offering motorists significant fuel savings, underscoring the government’s drive toward a more sustainable and cost-effective energy future.
