President Bola Tinubu has called on the Nigerian judiciary to adhere strictly to its constitutional role, despite facing criticism from those who only value its decisions when they favor their interests.
The President delivered this message at the Abuja launch of “Judging With Justice,” an autobiography of former Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu urged the judiciary to rise above negative comments from critics who only appreciate the institution when rulings align with their expectations.
He highlighted that the pensions of judicial officers are now secured, with retired justices set to receive their final salaries as lifelong pensions.
“The Nigerian judiciary must live up to its constitutional mandate and disregard those who only praise it when outcomes are in their favor,” Tinubu stated.
The event, chaired by former Head of State Abdusalami Abubakar, took place at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, shortly after Justice Ariwoola’s official retirement. Attendees included Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun—who is recommended to succeed Ariwoola, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, the Ooni of Ife, and various Supreme and Appeal Court Justices.
