Former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has warned that President Bola Tinubu, like many Nigerian politicians, is unlikely to easily relinquish power to the younger generation.
In a candid statement, Amaechi emphasized that politicians often go to extreme lengths to maintain their hold on power, citing historical events in Nigeria and Ghana as evidence.
Politicians Will Not Give Up Power Freely
Amaechi made it clear that no politician in Nigeria would willingly surrender power, regardless of the public’s demand for change. He pointed out that even when citizens call for a shift in leadership, politicians are determined to retain control. He also reflected on the struggles in Ghana, noting that citizens were ready to die for political change during a tense election period.
He stressed the need for a harsh political reality check: “You are talking and abusing everybody. Nobody with power will just give it to you—not even me,” he remarked. Amaechi further criticized the system, calling out Nigerian politicians for resorting to violence, theft, and even murder to maintain their positions.
Amaechi Warns Against Expecting Easy Change
In a blunt statement, Amaechi added, “If you think Tinubu will give it to you, you are wasting your time.” His message was clear—political change will not come easily, and citizens must remain vigilant and active in demanding their rights.
Reflecting on the 2015 Election: APC’s Determined Victory
Amaechi also reflected on the 2015 presidential election, where the APC’s victory was secured through the party’s determination and preparedness to defend its mandate. He credited President Goodluck Jonathan’s concession of defeat to the APC’s firm stance, urging Nigerians to adopt similar measures in future elections to ensure a fair and just political process.
