A Divisional Police Officer (DPO), SP Halliru Liman, from Wasagu Division in Kebbi State, was shot and killed by military personnel in the Danmarke area of Bukkuyum Local Government Area, Zamfara State.
The incident occurred during an operation conducted by soldiers attached to Operation Dadarin Daji.
The Zamfara State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the incident, stating that SP Liman was killed despite clearly identifying himself as a police officer. The statement provided details of the event, stating, “On August 28, 2024, at approximately 10:30 hours, SP Liman was brutally murdered by military personnel led by one Hassan, attached to OPHD Sector 6, Dan Marke area of Bukkuyum, Zamfara State.”
The statement described the killing as “alarming and unacceptable,” noting that SP Liman was on his way to attend a monthly conference in Birnin Kebbi when he was stopped by the soldiers. Despite identifying himself, the officer was shot in the head by one of the soldiers, resulting in his immediate death.
The police condemned the attack as an unprovoked act of violence and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. “The military’s actions are a clear violation of the rules of engagement and the principles of inter-agency cooperation,” the statement added, urging relevant authorities to take immediate action to ensure those responsible are held accountable.
ASP Abubakar emphasized the importance of cooperation between the police and military to maintain peace and security, stressing that such violent confrontations undermine public trust. He extended his condolences to the family and colleagues of SP Halliru Liman and assured them that the police would pursue justice in this case.
