The United States has claimed that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife have been captured and removed from the country.
The announcement follows earlier U.S. actions, including a decision to double the reward for information leading to Maduro’s arrest to $50 million over alleged involvement in international drug trafficking. Maduro and several top Venezuelan officials were first indicted by the U.S. government in 2020.
In a statement posted on his Truth Social account on Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump said the operation was carried out with the support of American law enforcement agencies.
“The United States of America has successfully carried out a large-scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the country,” Trump wrote.
He added that further details would be provided at a news conference scheduled for 11 a.m. at Mar-a-Lago.
