Governor Josh Stein of North Carolina has officially declared June 14, 2025, as ‘Igbo Day’ to honor the immense contributions of the Nigerian Igbo community to the state’s development over the past five decades.
The proclamation, published on North Carolina’s official government website, highlights the significant and multifaceted impact of the Igbo people in sectors including the economy, public service, education, medicine, law, entrepreneurship, and information technology. Members of the community have also served in various state and federal government positions, further exemplifying their dedication to civic engagement and leadership.
Governor Stein noted that the Igbo community’s commitment to North Carolina has extended well beyond professional achievements. Over the years, they have:
- Volunteered in local schools,
- Adopted highways to support environmental cleanliness,
- Supported women’s shelters and hospitals,
- Organized food pantry drives, and
- Participated in cultural performances at local festivals.
“The Igbo in North Carolina are dedicated to ensuring the sustainability of their culture by creating cultural awareness for future generations,” Governor Stein stated. “They are involved in many charitable causes and have made notable contributions to the economy. They have participated in elections and excel in various careers.”
Governor Stein further expressed his admiration for the community’s vision, stating that the Igbo people are working toward building a thriving, unified, and culturally proud society in North Carolina—one that honors their rich Nigerian heritage while serving as a beacon of inclusion, support, and inspiration.
“I am excited to see the Igbo community inspire future generations to embrace their identity and foster a strong sense of belonging and purpose within North Carolina,” he said.
Governor Stein formally announced:
“Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim June 14, as ‘Igbo Day’ in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.”
The proclamation marks a historic moment of cultural recognition and reaffirms the state’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and the celebration of immigrant communities who continue to shape its identity.
