Organisers of a rally in support of the Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, were this Saturday morning, September 17, 2022, “teargassed by the police in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, in South-East Nigeria,” according to a Channels TV breaking news.

“Members and their supporters had gathered along Mile 50 to embark on a rally to canvass support for their candidate but were stopped from going into the streets,” the report said.

It quoted one of the supporters, Nwali Ikechukwu, as saying that some persons were injured when the security agency came calling.

The report said that the spokesman for the Ebonyi State Police Command, SP Chris Anyanwu, could not be immediately reached for comments.

In another report by News Band; The rampaging officers fired live bullets and teargas, and arrested on ground some “Obidients”, as the supporters of Peter Obi are called.

According to eyewitnesses, the policemen, were sent by the Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. David Nweze Umahi, who also doubles as the Chairman of the South East Governor’s forum.

The security personnel reportedly made all frantic efforts to disrupt the peaceful rally.
