Heavy gunfire erupted in the Biogbolo community of Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, on Thursday as a peaceful hunger protest turned violent by pro- government thugs.

The demonstrators, marching along the Mbiama/Yenagoa road to protest economic hardships, were attacked by hired thugs opposing the protest.

Despite the presence of two police vans meant to ensure security, the situation quickly escalated, resulting in multiple injuries among the protesters.

Governor Douye Diri had previously advised the state’s youth on Wednesday to avoid participating in the protest and instead engage in dialogue with the government. However, the advice went unheeded as a large crowd of demonstrators gathered and marched from the Opolo axis of the Mbiama/Yenagoa road towards Ebi Mechanic Junction.

Police officers monitoring the march attempted to prevent any disturbances, but the protesters insisted on continuing, voicing their grievances about the nation’s economic conditions and asserting their right to protest. The situation deteriorated rapidly when community youths unexpectedly launched an attack on the protesters from behind, using bottles, planks, and other weapons. The chaos was compounded by the sound of gunshots, forcing protesters to flee in all directions.

In response to the unrest, Yenagoa’s businesses, including shops and banks, remained closed early in the morning. Security operatives were stationed at major junctions and roundabouts throughout the metropolis to maintain order.
