The Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS) has declared its readiness to work alongside the Anambra State Government to combat the presence of unknown gunmen and other criminal elements within its forested areas.
The service vowed to comb all the forests in the state where killers and kidnappers of innocent citizens had their camps and hideouts. The Commander of the NFSS, Anambra State Command, Destiny Jonas, made this known in a statement made available to newsmen on Thursday in Abuja.
The urgency of this collaboration was underscored by recent violent incidents including the kidnapping of an Anambra lawmaker, the abduction of an Anglican clergy member, and the murder of a Catholic priest. Additionally, the brutal killing of eight individuals in Chigbonu village, Umuike Ubahuekwem, Ihiala on December 30, 2024, further highlighted the need for intensified security measures.
“NFSS is eager to utilize its expertise to secure the forests for both economic and security benefits,” Jonas stated. He emphasized the service’s deep knowledge of forest terrains, which positions them to effectively dismantle criminal operations.
The NFSS aims to support the state government’s “Operation Udo Ga Di Na Anambra Security Initiative,” aimed at eliminating criminal threats in rural areas. Jonas stressed the importance of intelligence gathering and the need for official recognition and cooperation from government bodies to execute these operations successfully.
Expressing concern over the state’s deteriorating security, Jonas noted that investors are shying away from Anambra due to ongoing threats. He highlighted that during the festive season, NFSS operatives worked alongside police and other security agencies to safeguard returning residents.
Jonas outlined plans to target specific high-risk areas like Achala, Igbariam, and Nsugbe, where NFSS personnel are already deployed. He announced intentions to wage a comprehensive campaign against criminal camps starting in January 2025, contingent upon gaining the necessary permissions from the authorities.
He also shared success stories, mentioning that several kidnapped victims were rescued by NFSS operatives over the holiday period. The overarching goal, according to Jonas, is to ensure Anambra’s forests are no longer breeding grounds for crimes such as deforestation and kidnappings.
Jonas praised the Deputy Commander-General of NFSS, John Metchie, for his significant contributions to the service, calling him an “enigma” and crediting him with a broad vision for security across Nigeria. He also acknowledged the leadership of the Commander-General, Joshua Osatimehin, for fostering unity and purpose within the organization.
