Bolaji Abdullahi, the Interim National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has revealed why high-profile political figures Peter Obi and Nasir El-Rufai have not yet officially joined the opposition party.

During a press briefing in Abuja over the weekend, Abdullahi clarified that both politicians are still engaged with pending electoral obligations within their former political parties. According to him, this has delayed their formal transition to the ADC.

“They were given the opportunity to finalise pending elections, including by-elections and the selection of governorship candidates within their legacy parties,” Abdullahi stated, indicating that both Obi and El-Rufai remain fully committed to the opposition coalition and will complete the switch once those processes are concluded.

Addressing concerns about legal challenges to the growing coalition, Abdullahi dismissed the rumors of any serious disputes, expressing confidence in the party’s strategic legal approach.

“We are confident in the legality of every step we have taken. We made sure we closed all loopholes the ruling party might try to use against us,” he added.

The ADC has recently positioned itself as a rising platform for key political actors dissatisfied with Nigeria’s ruling and main opposition parties. The potential entry of Obi and El-Rufai is expected to significantly reshape the 2025 political landscape.
