Aviation specialists in the UAE have outlined reasons behind the ongoing travel restrictions against Nigeria, shedding light on the complexities influencing diplomatic relations between the two nations.

According to insights shared with THISDAY, experts assert that the UAE’s stance is a deliberate decision aligned with its strategic positioning, aimed at preserving the peace and safety of its society while attracting visitors who uphold these values.

The UAE’s shifting diplomatic priorities, now focusing on attracting peace-loving tourists globally, have led to a reassessment of its relationship with Nigeria. Recent incidents involving Nigerians in Dubai, including violent altercations and criminal activities, have contributed to the UAE’s cautious approach.

Bankole Bernard, General Managing Director of Flinchglow Holdings Limited and former President of NANTA, emphasized that Nigeria’s behavior in the UAE, rather than financial disputes, dictates the current diplomatic status. Bernard highlighted instances of Nigerian misconduct, emphasizing the UAE’s zero-tolerance policy towards crime and violence.

Furthermore, Bernard noted that Nigeria’s reputation for indiscipline has repercussions beyond the UAE, citing South Africa’s imposition of restrictions on Nigerian travelers due to similar concerns.

Ambassador Ikechi Uko, a prominent travel expert, echoed sentiments regarding the UAE’s strategic realignment. He emphasized the UAE’s pursuit of affluent tourists who align with the country’s vision for peace and prosperity.

UAE’s ambitious tourism goals, outlined in the UAE Tourism Strategy 2031, underscore its commitment to becoming a premier global destination. With initiatives aimed at strengthening tourism infrastructure and attracting substantial investments, the UAE is charting a path towards sustained economic growth through tourism.

While Nigeria’s exclusion from the UAE’s tourism targets signifies a diplomatic impasse, it also reflects the UAE’s strategic pivot towards quality tourism experiences and enhanced security measures.

As the UAE navigates its diplomatic landscape, collaboration between nations and adherence to shared values will be essential for fostering enduring relationships and promoting sustainable tourism development.
