The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has called on Nigerians to fulfill their tax obligations, stressing that the government needs revenue to deliver essential social services.
Wike made this statement on Wednesday during the inaugural Abuja Business and Investment Summit, organized by the Abuja Investment Company Limited.
The summit, themed “Optimising Investment Through Partnerships,” aligns with the Federal Government’s initiative to leverage collaboration in fostering investment opportunities. Wike addressed the misconception that the government does not require funds, clarifying that revenue is crucial for providing public services.
Highlighting instances of failed public-private partnerships, Wike expressed concern about the government investing heavily in projects without securing returns. He questioned the fairness of such investments, stating, “How can the government contribute money and land, but in the end, not benefit at all?”
Reiterating the importance of taxation, Wike said, “The government needs money to function. That’s why it is essential to pay taxes. While we create a conducive environment for investors, we must ensure both parties—investors and the government—benefit, so that everyone is satisfied.”
