Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, are reportedly determined to impeach Governor Siminlayi Fubara of Rivers State.

This move persists despite previous intervention by President Bola Tinubu in the political crisis within the South-South state.

The minister’s camp has reportedly regrouped and mobilized efforts to carry out the governor’s impeachment in the coming days, NN News Media gathered.

They have sought support from pro-Niger Delta groups and allegedly ignored the president’s advice for a ceasefire, emphasizing the potential implications for regional stability.

The camp is deploying various means to secure the backing of state agencies with coercive power for the impeachment. Some assembly members opposing the process have reportedly been stripped of their security, while eight lawmakers sympathetic to the plot enjoy law enforcement support.

The conflict between Wike and Fubara escalated when Wike loyalists in the assembly attempted to impeach the governor. Subsequently, part of the assembly was set ablaze, and Governor Fubara claimed to have been attacked by gunmen during an assessment of the damage.

Wike clarified the feud after a meeting with some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors, stating that he wasn’t seeking financial gratification but accused Fubara of attempting to control the PDP structure in Rivers.

Earlier today 27 PDP out of 32 members of the State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, announced their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday.

This shift in allegiance took place in Port Harcourt, with the lawmakers expressing their continued loyalty to the former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, despite their move to the APC. The situation reflects ongoing political dynamics and realignments within the state.
