The lawmakers of the Rivers State House of Assembly, who are loyalists of former governor and the FCT minister Nysom Wike, have reported Governor Siminalayi Fubara to the Inspector General of Police and the Department of State Services.
This action was taken following Fubara’s controversial declaration that the Rivers State House of Assembly does not exist, which has led to impeachment threats against him.
The lawmakers have accused Fubara of trespassing on their premises without prior notification and have expressed their concerns to the authorities. The political tension continues to escalate in Rivers State.
During a visit to the State House of Assembly Quarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara was seen taking a stroll.
This visit, however, has sparked a series of events that have led to a political crisis.
The legislators of the Rivers State House of Assembly have lodged a complaint against Governor Fubara with IGP Kayode Egbetokun and the Department of State Services (DSS). The bone of contention is Fubara’s assertion that the Rivers State House of Assembly is non-existent, a statement that has prompted the lawmakers to consider his impeachment.
In the aftermath of Fubara’s visit to the House of Assembly, the legislators convened a meeting to discuss their grievances with the governor. They alleged that Fubara trespassed on their premises without informing the speaker, Martin Amaewhule.
Major Jack, the Majority leader of the Rivers House of Assembly, expressed his dismay, “Our meeting place was intruded upon by the governor of Rivers State. We were under the impression that they had broken into this place without an invitation and without notifying the speaker.”
He added, “They announced that they intended to inspect and tear down our quarters that were constructed two years ago. Mr. Speaker, what have we done to deserve this from the governor?”
In response to these allegations, Amaewhule revealed that the Assembly had notified the Inspector General of Police and the Director General of DSS about Fubara’s threats to the lawmakers and residents of the quarters.
In a related development, the All Progressives Congress (APC) declared on Friday that Fubara’s attempt to disregard Nigeria’s constitution and govern while denying the existence of the state legislature is grounds for impeachment.
This statement was made by APC spokesman, Felix Morka, following a press briefing held by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday. The PDP, taken aback by Fubara’s unsettling actions, dismissed the APC Rivers state chapter’s call for the governor’s impeachment.
The APC also criticized the PDP for presenting a baseless argument that the 27 House of Assembly members who switched from the PDP to the APC have lost their seats, thereby echoing the governor’s declaration that the Rivers State House of Assembly is non-existent.
Muoka countered the PDP’s claims, stating, “It is not the APC that is demanding Governor Fubara’s impeachment. Instead, through his outrageous actions, behavior, and immature remarks, Fubara is actively and forcefully bringing about his own impeachment.”
