Abuja, Nigeria – July 24, 2025 — Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, the current Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, has officially taken over as the new National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), following a consensus-driven decision by the party’s leadership.
Yilwatda was formally sworn into office at exactly 2:52 PM on Thursday, during the 14th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party, which took place at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
His emergence follows the recent resignation of former chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, who stepped down last month citing health-related reasons. The transition was marked by a spirit of unity and strategic alignment as the party prepares for upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Kogi, Edo, and Ondo states.
The nomination of Professor Yilwatda was formally announced by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, and seconded by House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas. The NEC then ratified his appointment as part of what party insiders described as a deliberate consensus move to maintain party cohesion.
A former gubernatorial candidate in Plateau State, Yilwatda is recognized for his technocratic expertise and grassroots engagement. These attributes, along with his loyalty to the APC, were reportedly instrumental in building consensus around his candidacy.
Thursday’s NEC meeting was presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and attended by key party stakeholders, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, various APC governors, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and members of the National Working Committee (NWC).
With his new mandate, Professor Yilwatda is expected to steer the ruling party through a critical phase in its political trajectory, focusing on unity, electoral strategy, and policy alignment ahead of upcoming elections and broader national engagements.
