The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) has achieved a decisive victory in the Abia State local government elections, winning in 15 out of the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across the state.

The Young Progressives Party (YPP) secured victories in the remaining two LGAs: Osisioma Ngwa and Ugwunagbo.

Announcing the results on Saturday, Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), Prof. Chima George, extended his congratulations to all participants, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace. “In any election, there must be a winner and a loser. I’m thankful for the peaceful process in Abia, and I urge everyone to uphold this harmony,” Prof. George said.

The ZLP’s strong performance was highlighted by significant wins, including Maxwell Nwadike in Obingwa LGA with 33,667 votes, and Chibunna Akara in Ukwa East with 30,941 votes, outperforming parties such as APGA, LP, PDP, and YPP. Other key victories for ZLP included Timothy Iheke in Aba North, Anyanwu Obialor in Aba South, and Pastor Dike Nwankwo in Ukwa West.

The YPP, though a distant second in total wins, claimed important victories, with Iheanacho Chiemela Nwagbara winning in Ugwunagbo and Chidi Chris Agu in Osisioma Ngwa, who led with 29,088 votes. These two LGAs mark YPP’s only successes in the election.

In Umuahia North, ZLP’s Smart Iheoma won by a considerable margin with 41,803 votes, while in Umuahia South, ZLP’s Chinedu Enwereizo led with 20,973 votes. Chinedum Ekeke also secured a significant win for ZLP in Isiukwuato LGA.

In his closing remarks, Prof. George commended the security agencies, political leaders, the media, and all involved for their role in ensuring a peaceful, orderly, and successful election process in Abia State.
