A former Labour Party presidential candidate has taken to X (formerly Twitter) to strongly criticize the Federal Government’s recent decision to allocate ₦142 billion for the construction of bus terminals across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
Describing the move as “another evidence of misplaced priority,” the former candidate questioned the government’s commitment to meaningful development. According to him, the hallmark of national progress lies in how well a country prioritizes its limited resources—something he believes the current leadership has failed to do.
He pointed out a glaring contrast: in the 2024 budget currently in effect, the combined allocation for all teaching hospitals in federal universities and all federal psychiatric centres is less than ₦100 billion. Meanwhile, a larger sum has been earmarked for bus terminals.
“This is disturbing,” he stated, emphasizing the deteriorating state of healthcare in Nigeria. He cited a recent WHO report estimating that over 20 million Nigerians are living with mental health issues—yet the sector remains grossly underfunded.
Calling the decision a “tragic irony” and an example of poor governance, he concluded by reiterating his vision:
“A New Nigeria is POssible.”
