The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Anambra State chapter, has decried with great disdain the inability of the two major political parties,APC and PDP to elect their presidential candidates from southeast extraction in the spirit of justice, equity, patriotism, morality and good conscience.
This was contained in a press statement issued weekend to newsmen, endorsed by Comrades Vincent Ezekwueme Chidi Mbah and Hyginus Udensi chairman, secretary and treasurer respectively, tagged ‘The Future is Bright’.
The statement reads in part:
“To our greatest consternation and disbelief, our political leaders who went to Asaba to endorse out of their own conviction the much cherished and celebrated Asaba declaration by Southern political leaders that the next president should come from south worked and voted against actualisation of Nigeria President Of Igbo Extraction by voting massively for candidates from other zones that have had their own opportunity to rule the country.
“Such monumental betrayal and selfishness has always been the greatest bane of the southeast effort to properly reintegrate herself in the leadership of the country and reach its pride of place in the nation.
“It is noteworthy that unless and untill we replaced avarice with selflessness, nepotism with patriotism, mediocrity with meritocracy, injustice with justices, our much cherished Nigeria President of Igbo extraction will continue to elude us.
“All hope is not lost; if we can repent, live above self and think and work for common good and interest, we will still make our bad good, our good better, and our better best.
“We call for aggressive and patriotic sensitization and mobilization of citizens to obtain their permanent voters card.
It is pertinent to note that politics drives socioeconomic, political, religious and social life of every nation, hence the inexorable need for all adults suffrage to take active part.
“We appeal to Ohaneze Ndigbo, political, religious, markets and civil society organisations’ leaders to commence “Operation Obtain and Show Your Voters’ Card” as a way and means of motivating and encouraging citizens to participates actively in their civic responsibilities.
“It is of prime importance to note that rights without responsibilities is one of the worst blunders of the world.
“We commend efforts of INEC to deploy and employ more hands and capturing machines in the south east in view of upsurge of prospective registrants.
“More concerted efforts, commitments and sacrifices are needed, especially in increasing days and hours registration of office work.
“If possible Sundays may be included to ensure that everyone is captured and registered.
“We commend APC and PDP delegates from Ebonyi State during their presidential primary elections for not only voting their conscience and conviction but they bought and brought honour, glory, trust and goodwill to the Igbo nation.
“When a leader is right be with him, if he is still right stay with him and commend him, in order to encourage, motivates and propels him to do more.
“We appeal to the leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo to give well-deserved award of Igbo Patriots to all the delegates from Ebonyi State and few others from other states that voted wisely devoid of inducements in order to encourage honesty , integrity and efforts to change politics from transactional to transformational.
“The current unprecedented political awareness, reawakening and consciousness deserve commendation.
“It is a clear indication that the future is bright and there will be prosperous and progressive life and light at the end of the tunnel,” the CLO posited.
