Igbo neighbours have come to the rescue of a Northern Muslim attacked by unknown gunmen in Anambra State, South-East Nigeria, picking his medical bills and going the extra mile to see that he survives the attack.

The beneficiary of the kind gesture is Abdulkarim Adamu, a native of Adamawa State working as security man to Chief Joe Martins Uzodike, the Commissioner for Culture, Tourism and Chieftaincy Affairs during the days of Labour Party 2023 Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, as Governor of Anambra State.

News Express learnt that Adamu went to Nnobi, neighbouring town to his Awka Etiti, on a market day to buy foodstuff, but on his way back ran into a convoy of unknown gunmen at a bad spot at the junction leading to Iruowele Town Hall.

According to popular Anambra blogger Mazi Odera, “As Adamu slowed down to crawl past, the convoy of the UGM (Unknown Gunmen), the unofficial owners of the road and state, ran into him and not knowing who they were, he banged on the hood of the Jeep that rammed into his ladies motorcycle. This provoked the UGM riders and they came down and pumped hot lead into his tummy and his intestines sprawled on the road as everybody ran for dear lives.”

Odera disclosed that after the departure of the gunmen, the village vigilante promptly moved in, pushed Adamu’s intestines back into his stomach, “held the tummy together with sealing tape and rushed him to Fatima Hospital Awka Etiti, where the doctors confirmed that the situation appeared hopeless”. On learning that Adamu works for Joe Martins Uzodike, legendary in the environ for his benevolence, the doctors were said to have immediately placed a call to him. “Joe Martins, who was in court for a case, stepped out to answer the call. When they told him what happened and how hopeless the situation was, Joe Martins vowed to do everything humanly possible to save the life of Adamu.

“He hired the best ambulance that took the then sedated Adamu to Nnewi Teaching Hospital where he paid big money to assemble consultants who operated on the guy for six hours and stabilised him,” Odera reported.

News Express learnt that Adamu, who was shot on June 22, 2022, eventually spent four months at Nnewi Teaching Hospital, undergoing three surgeries before being discharged last week – with Joe Martins Uzodike footing the bill.
