The Nigerian government, through the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Mediation and Security Council, Yusuf Tuggar, has expressed concern over the increasing frequency of military coups in West Africa.
Tuggar emphasized the threat posed by these coups to the democratic culture of the region. He made these remarks during the opening of the 51st Ordinary Session of the Mediation and Security Council, an organ of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The Security Council plays a crucial role in addressing security issues within the ECOWAS region.
The envoy, Yusuf Tuggar, highlighted the recent thwarted coup attempts in Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau, urging members of the Mediation and Security Council to collectively address these challenges to promote lasting peace and stability in West Africa.
He commended the governments of Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau for their successful efforts in preventing the destabilization of constitutional order.
Tuggar emphasized the importance of discussing collective existential challenges, devising strategies, and shaping policies through constructive dialogue for a comprehensive and coordinated response aligned with the needs of member states.
He urged decisions to be guided by transparency, inclusivity, and the promotion of democratic values. Additionally, Tuggar congratulated Liberia for its recent successful elections, applauding the ECOWAS Commission’s leadership and dedicated staff for their tireless efforts in advancing community interests and fostering regional peace and security.
