Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the 2023 governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State, along with six associates, has urged the state’s House of Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The request, outlined in a letter dated December 14, 2023, accuses the governor of “abuse of office and misappropriation of state resources.”
The letter, addressed to the Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, points to allegations supported by documented evidence on the Lagos State Public Procurement Authority website (www.lagesppa.gov.ng). The concerns revolve around the purported payment of N200 million for the governor’s personal legal fees and the provision of furniture for the party secretariat.
According to the letter, the allegations suggest a concerning pattern of behavior by the governor, raising doubts about his commitment to accountability and responsible governance. The signatories argue that if proven true, these actions constitute a serious violation of the public trust and grounds for impeachment.
The letter emphasizes the urgency of the matter, given its potential impact on the welfare of Lagos State residents. The signatories implore the Lagos State House of Assembly to prioritize the issue and conduct a thorough and impartial investigation, acknowledging the careful consideration and due process required for such proceedings.
Rhodes-Vivour and his associates express their belief that the Lagos State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Mudashiru Obasa, must uphold its constitutional duty to safeguard the interests and well-being of the people. They emphasize that the commitment to justice and accountability will not only renew hope among Lagosians but also contribute to the continued growth and prosperity of Lagos State.
The call for impeachment comes after Rhodes-Vivour previously alleged, in November, that the state government paid four law firms N50 million each to defend Governor Sanwo-Olu’s election victory, as shared on his verified Twitter handle @GRVlagos.
